In Gagra there is a large number of historical monuments that vividly reflect the events of the history of this region, which took place over many centuries. The main of them are: Abaata fortress IV- V, or rather its ruins, the temple of VI century, the ruins of the tower of Bestuzhev-Marlinsky 1841, Gagra Colonnade 1951 and the palace of Prince Oldenburgsky. However, among them the interesting natural gorge of the Tsikherva River also deserves special attention. "Tsikherva" is translated from the Abkhazian language as "dried up spring". Tsikherva gorge is a natural border between Old and New Gagra.
The beginning of the gorge is very poor in vegetation and is just a bare cleft in the mountains. At the same time, the attention of tourists can attract the old building of the former secondary school № 2, which became famous thanks to its graduates - heroes of the Soviet Union. M. Bastanjyan, R. Bartsits, V. Popkov and A. Maltsev studied in this school. Today the school houses a historical museum of military glory, which stores a huge number of interesting exhibits that have a direct connection with the participants of World War II, who came from Gagra and Gagra district.
In the depths of the Tsikherva gorge is the cave of Eupatius (Euphrates), which is a stone "building" consisting of two small rooms. It was named after monk Euphrates who lived here at the end of the second half of the XIX century. Believing Abkhazians honoured the monk very much. As early as 527 by order of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I Augustus Euphrates was spreading Christianity in Abkhazia.
Near the cave of Eupatius (Euphrates) is a road that leads deep into the Tsikherva gorge to the waterfall, behind which is hidden stalactite cave. It is here that the poor vegetation changes dramatically to that of the alpine and subalpine zones.
Some parts of the Tsikherva river gorge are equipped with special observation platforms, from where you can enjoy an amazing panorama of Gagra, Pitsunda, the valley of the Bzyb River and the Musseru River.
