Lake San Martin is located in the Argentine state of Santa Cruz. It is is one of the 10 largest lakes on the planet and is the deepest on the South American continent. The lake is located on the border of Argentina and Chile. Their unit in Argentina was named after the national hero in the struggle for independence, José de San Martin. Its total area is about 1,010 square metres and its depth reaches a depth of 836 metres. It is irregular in shape and has 8 arms. Into the lake the Mayer River and several brooks flow into the lake and the Pascua River flows out. There are also the lake are drained by two glaciers, the O'Higgins and the Chico.

San Martin is surrounded by unusually beautiful landscapes of pampas and chains of snowy peaks. The local flora and fauna is astonishingly rich. There are over a hundred species of animals and birds.

Lake San Martin is known for its clear waters. The colour of the water varies from blue to green. It is home to a large number of trout. In this regard, fans of sport fishing often organize competitions on its shores.

The tourist centre of the area is the small town of El Chalten. Here there is everything for a comfortable stay of tourists: campsites, souvenir shops, information centre, travel agencies. Tourists are offered excursions to different corners of San Martin: walks on the water, hiking tours in the vicinity of the lake for fans of eco-tourism, lovers of extreme holidays are waiting for picturesque snowy Andean peaks.
