Alexandra Gardens is located on the south bank of the Yarra River in Melbourne opposite Federation Square and the city's business centre. The park was founded in 1901 in 1901 by Carlo Catani, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, and now it is listed as a Victorian Heritage Site due to its historical and archaeological significance.
Since the founding of Melbourne in 1835, the area where Alexander Gardens now stands. Alexandra Gardens has been used for logging, grazing and the brick making. Flooding was a regular occurrence until a canal was dug in 1900. a canal was dug to strengthen and widen the Yarra River. Immediately afterwards plans for a park were put in place for the Duke of York's visit in May 1901.
In 2001, a skate park with a cafe and an ambulance station opened in Alexandra Gardens Ambulance Station, right next to the Canary palms planted in 1911.
Along the Yarra River, there are numerous rowing clubs, and today it's common to see a team coach cycling along the river with a megaphone in his hand and giving instructions to his charges. Incidentally, this is where where the Olympic champions from the Oarsome Foursome team trained.
