Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts is Western Australia's premier venue for visual arts exhibitions and cultural performances. Housed in a building of cultural and historical significance, PICA serves to promote contemporary art to the masses. The building, built in 1896, was a city school for boys and girls for the first 40 years of its history, then a boys-only school (until 1958), part of a technical school and finally became an exhibition centre in 1988.
PICA hosts a variety of events throughout the year - exhibitions, performances, film screenings, presentations and more. It also hosts educational programmes designed to strengthen the relationship between art and the public. Today, PICA plays a key role in Perth's public cultural life, supporting artists at various stages of their careers.
