The Queensland Museum is the state's main museum, with its collections housed at 4 campuses: in South Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba and Townsville.
The museum was founded on 20 January 1862 by the Queensland Philosophical Society, headed by Charles Coxen. IN 1879 the state government built a building for the museum in William Street, where the the museum moved to for the next 20 years. In 1899, the Queensland Museum moved again - this time to Exhibition Hall (now called the Old Museum) in the Brisbane suburb of Bowen Hills, where it was located for 87 years. In 1986, the Museum moved to the Queensland Cultural Centre on the South Shore and is located next door to the Queensland Art Gallery.

South Shore Museum is located near South Shore Park in Brisbane's cultural centre. It is the largest and oldest campus where you can learn about Queensland's history, its past present and future.
