The Tandania Centre for Aboriginal Studies is a unique place for those who want to learn about and experience Australia's amazing Indigenous culture up close.
"Tandania" was the name given by the Aboriginal people to the area on which Adelaide was built and on which they lived and conducted their ritual practices for many millennia."
The centre was established in 1989 and is now Australia's oldest Aboriginal cultural centre with only Indigenous staff. The halls of Tandania showcase the work of both emerging and internationally recognised artists. You can also hear the playing of the ancient wind instrument, the djiridu, which is a two-metre long wooden or bamboo trumpet, and learn about the ritual significance of certain sounds. Colourful performances with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ritual dances using body language will tell the story of local tribal life.
In the souvenir shop you can not only buy Australian Aboriginal handicrafts, but also learn first-hand about their sacred meanings. And the local cafe is a must-try for traditional Australian Aboriginal cuisine. Not far from Tandania is Rymill Park.
