The Southern Star Observation Wheel is a unique attraction that opened in Melbourne's Dockland neighbourhood in 2008. It has a diameter of 100 metres and a height of approx - 120 metres, which puts the South Star on a par with such giant Ferris wheels as the London Eye, the Nanchang Star in China and the ride in Singapore. The wheel's 21 cabins hold 420 people, which complete a revolution in half an hour.

The Southern Star is decorated with light-emitting diodes that switch on at night and create an unforgettable spectacle. The construction of this attraction, which lasted from 2006 to 2008, cost around A$100 million. However, just a month after opening, the wheel was closed due to defects. Repairs took several months, after which the Southern Star" was reopened to the public, but, as it turned out, not for long. Since January 2011, the attraction has been undergoing extensive repair work again.
