Not far from the Sydney Aquarium, a wildlife park "Wild World" was opened in 2006. Today it is a full member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
In May 2002, the administration of the Sydney Aquarium announced its intention to expand its grounds to include a wildlife park. Construction of the new park began in 2004 and was completed two years later. А In 2007, the park won the top prize at the Australian Tourism Awards as the best family holiday destination.
There is a 1 kilometre long walkway that winds through the park among cages covering an area of 7,000 square metres. Today there are about 6 thousand animals, representing 130 species of local fauna.
The upper level enclosures are outdoors and are bounded by huge stainless steel mesh barriers, which are supported curvilinear beams. This design allowed the aviaries to be decorated with live plants and real trees. The largest exposition, occupying 800 sq.m., represents the semi-desert zone - it contains 250 tonnes of red sand, imported from central Australia and huge baobabs. Here is home to red kangaroos.
Generally, the entire wildlife park is divided into 10 key zones: "Butterflies", "Invertebrates", "Reptiles", "Kakadu Gorge", "Koala Roof", "Nocturnal Animals", "Rainforest", "Wallaby Cliffs", "Koala Sanctuary" and "Semi-desert Expanse".
In 2009, a new resident was brought to the park - a 5 metre long male saltwater crocodile named Rex, for whom a special enclosure was built at a cost of A$5 million.
