The Atomium was built in 1958 to coincide with the opening of the World Expo. and symbolised the atomic age and the peaceful use of atomic energy. It is a model of an iron molecule, 102 metres high and weighing 2,400 tonnes, made up of spheres and covered in a steel shell. The six spheres are connected by corridors and escalators hidden in pipes, corridors and escalators for visitors to access the inside of the structure. In the middle one has a high-speed lift to the restaurant and observation deck in the highest sphere of the structure.

The monument was originally erected during the Cold War as a a demonstration of the triumph of the achievements of socialism over capitalism. This majestic monument, casting a dazzling lustre, carries cultural and cultural and educational purposes, as evidenced by the display of nuclear energy research.

Originally built for only a few days, the Atomium still stands today, symbolising the modernity of the country and the endless belief in the peaceful benefits of atomic energy and the favourable outcome of world history.

The 102 metre high observation platform offers a beautiful panoramic panoramic view of Brussels. There is a small shop with souvenirs at the bottom.
