The Acapana Pyramid is one of Bolivia's major landmarks, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 as "a testament to the power of an empire that played a major role in the development of civilisation in pre-Columbian America". It is still a mystery to researchers how the aborigines of South America were able to build a pyramid out of stone on a high plateau. After all, some stone blocks weigh more than 200 tonnes. Akapana is part of the ensemble of the complex of the ancient city of Tiwanaku. The multistage pyramid rose 15 metres above this mysterious place and adjoined to the semi-underground temple. Now at the foot of Akapana excavations are still in full swing. After ancient burials of a skeleton of a man, priest or chief, remains of a lama and gold jewellery were found here, the area became very popular not only with tourists but also with archaeologists. The find was unique already because it is almost unreal to find intact pre-Columbian remains in South America. Visit of pyramids and the complex of Tiahuanaco, became obligatory route for all who come to Bolivia. Therefore, the authorities have decided to throw all forces on restoration of Acapana. To return it to its former appearance with the help of adobe bricks. However, specialists in the protection of cultural monuments are worried that the base of the ancient pyramid may not be able to withstand the load.
