The Temple of God the Guardian of the City is a very popular place in Shanghai. The building was built back in 1403, but it was burned and destroyed very many times. In 1926 a global reconstruction of the temple was carried out, and it acquired a modern look. And since 2006 this place can be visited by tourists and believers.
The territory of the temple, which covers an area of more than 10 thousand square metres, is adjacent to the territory of the Yuyuan Garden. Both of these places are created for silence, harmony and tranquility. Here one can feel the unity of man with nature. Supporters of Taoism visit the temple for prayers and worship.
The temple building is a large fortress of dark stone, which has a multi-level roof, similar to several pagodas. At the entrance of the temple, you can see 8 statues of immortals and the gate has red Chinese lanterns hanging and gold characters. Inside the temple too, everything is done in red and gold colour.
Inside the temple complex is the famous tea house. And on the territory since ancient times it is customary to hold festive fairs. These days there are especially many visitors. There is also a shopping district with small shops and brand name boutiques, as well as small cafes where you can eat.
