The Great Wall of China is recognised as one of the unique wonders of the world. In the history of world architecture, the grandiosity of this construction is unrivalled. The Great Wall of China was built as a military-defensive object, it was erected in the 3rd century BC. Thus, its history counts more than 2000 years. Emperor Qin Shihuangdi formed a single fortification of disparate fortresses.
Back in the time of the Warring Kingdoms, the construction of the Great Wall of China began. The state in those times needed defence from enemies, in particular, from Hunnu raids. More than a million people were involved in the work, at that time it was a fifth of the country's population.
There is an opinion that the Great Wall of China from space can be seen. It is erroneous. There is another widespread myth that the mortar to bind the stones was mixed from the powder of human bones, and to increase the strength of the construction of the dead at the construction site were buried directly in the wall. But there are no dead and bones in the construction of the wall, this is not true, and in the composition of the mortar - ordinary rice flour.
The size of the wall differs in different areas, the average height of the wall is 7.5 m, the height with teeth - 9 m, the width of the crest - 5.5 m, the width of the base - 6.5 metres.
Time has not spared this grandiose construction, but even today the Great Wall of China is a record-breaker in many respects and, above all, in length. As before, it is the longest construction ever created by man. Nowadays, the length of the wall reaches up to 2000 kilometres in a straight line, and taking into account all its branches and bends - it is an average of 5 thousand kilometres. Like a huge snake, the Great Wall of China winds along peaks, mountain ranges and passes. The wall begins in the city of Shaikhangguan in the east and ends in the province of Ganshu in the west.
