Monkey Island is undoubtedly a favourite tourist destination. Located near the city of Sanya, this reserve is the only place in the world where monkeys live in their usual natural conditions and are not afraid to get close to people.
You can get to the island by boat or by cable car. By the way, the cable car is a separate attraction. Its length is 2138 metres. It takes only 6 minutes to get to Monkey Island by cable car. During this time, you can admire the beautiful view that opens up to the ocean and mountains.
There are approximately 2,000 macaques living on the 1,000-hectare island. All of them are out in the wild, in their natural environment, among the rocks and trees. The monkeys approach people freely, so visitors should follow some rules of behaviour on the island. For example, it is undesirable to wear shiny jewellery or watches to avoid being snatched by curious animals. Cameras, water bottles and other small things can also arouse their interest. In addition, you cannot feed the monkeys yourself. You can only buy food for them and give it to an employee of the reserve, who will immediately feed the monkeys.
Another entertainment for tourists on the island is a show of trained monkeys, which amaze with their agility and intelligence. And some of the macaques can even swim breaststroke. Of course, this attraction is especially favoured by children.
Usually tourists return from the island by boat past a marvellous restaurant, which is located right on the water. In this quiet cosy place visitors are offered different seafood dishes. These include fried oysters, steamed fish, fish porridge and much, much more.
