A small zoo in Shanghai, located on the road leading to the airport, is included in all excursion programmes for tourists. But if you decide to visit it "savages", it is not superfluous to know a little about it.
The area of the zoo - almost 0.7 square kilometres - is divided into separate areas and fenced sectors, where rare and amazing animals live in enclosures, pens and cages. There are about four thousand of them here, over 330 species. About 600 animals are not found anywhere else in the world. These include: crocodiles, inhabitants of the Yangtze River; blue and white deer; the big panda or, as it is also called, the bamboo bear; North Chinese pheasants, which have feathers of an unusual colour: silver with a blue tinge in the tails of males and have plumage slightly darker than usual; South Chinese tigers, and others. Among the representatives of other parts of the world we can mention giraffes, elephants and hippos from Africa, seals and walruses from the North Pole, Australian kangaroos.
Shanghai Zoo is a favourite place for lovers, children and tourists. It is often the tour of the zoo that is most memorable for tourists. This zoo makes a very pleasant impression as all the animals living here are kept in excellent conditions, which cannot be said about other Chinese zoos.
There are many unusual performances in the zoo. For example, the Folk Entertainment Village, which features bullfights where visitors are free to place bets and cheer for their bull. There are cockfights. The birds not only fight here, but are also carefully treated by their owners after the fights. Such competitions are attended by a large number of people, with women and men almost equally.
There are different ways of travelling around the zoo: small tram, bus or walking. It is better to visit the zoo in the morning, otherwise you may not see many animals. They get tired in the heat and prefer to sleep, which means you won't be able to play or photograph your favourite animal.
It is also important to stock up on soft drinks and water. You can buy them at the entrance to the zoo, inside you will not find them.
