In 1520, the city senate decided to build a church on this site to thank God for saving it from the earthquake. Surprisingly, it became one of the few buildings that survived the next terrible earthquake in 1667, and therefore it is still standing and active. The façade of the church is decorated with a magnificent Gothic rose window.

Next to the church in the square is the Great Onofrio Fountain, which once supplied the entire city with water. The fountain was designed and built by Onofrio della Cava in the mid-15th century.
