The ancient fortress, built by the Byzantines in the 14th century, towers above the city. Several of its fragments have survived - the triangular bastions and the central tower. In the 30s of the 17th century the fortress was rebuilt by French architect Antoine de Willem. It is now home to the Provincial Museum of Istria.
