Stradun Street was once the site of a sea strait separating the island of Ragusa from the mainland Slavic settlement. But then the townspeople wisely decided to fill it in and pave it with marble slabs, and since then Stradun has remained the main shopping street of the old town.
Even now, when the Dalmatian language that once existed here is extinct, the locals sometimes call this street by its old name - Placa. It is a favourite strolling place for citizens and visitors. Many souvenir shops, boutiques and cafes are located here, and very narrow ancient side streets run off to the sides.
Stradun Street is home to the Small Onofrio Fountain, created at the same time as the Great Fountain.
