On Kaptol Square is the Cathedral. It was consecrated in honour of St Stephen, St Wladislaus and the Ascension of the Virgin Mary, and is mentioned in ancient chronicles dating back to the 9th century. After a major earthquake in 1880, the twin towers of the cathedral (each 105 metres high), designed in the Gothic style, crumbled into ashes. The towers and the facade of the cathedral were later rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style.
The interior of the cathedral is also designed in the Neo-Gothic style. The lower windows are made of mottled glass, designed by the Viennese architect Hermann Bolle at the end of the 19th century. The magnificent cathedral pulpit of 1696, which is supported by an angel, is made in the Baroque style. The triptych in the sacristy is by Albrecht Dürer (1495).
