In the seventeenth century, it was decided to strengthen the city's borders and protect it from pirate attacks. This is how the famous Castillo del Morro fortress was built, which was later added to the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. The construction of the fortress lasted almost 63 years and it was so impregnable that the famous corsair Henry Morgan remarked: "One soldier and one dog would be enough to defend this fortress".
