The tourist centre of Soroa is a truly paradisiacal place, which is considered a national treasure of the Republic. In the eastern part of the mountainous Sierra del Rosario mountain range of Pinar del Rio province, in 1943, in the small village of Soroa, a wealthy Spaniard decided to plant a beautiful garden. And the fertile soil, abundant water, mild climate and the humidity from the mountains allowed him to realise his dream. Today, the Experimental Floricultural Station has only 4,000 species of orchids. It is the world's second largest greenhouse of these rare exotic flowers, second only to the greenhouse in Boston. The collection of some 25,000 orchids from the most remote corners of the globe. Among them are one hundred species of orchids of Cuban origin. The most famous of these are the Black Orchid and the Chocolate Orchid. In addition to these tropical beauties there are magnolias, rose hips, philodendrons, palms, exotic ferns from all over the world. The fauna of the Soroa neighbourhood is also rich, especially the songbirds, hummingbirds and saltwort. The unique landscapes, the stunning greenhouse attracts amateur photographers and floral experts.
