The small church of Angeloktistos, which is located just a dozen kilometres from Larnaca in the village of Kiti, is world famous. The church is a truly unique structure, as it actually consists of three separate buildings, erected in different eras. Originally a Christian sanctuary appeared on this site in the 5th century, but it was destroyed during one of the Arab raids.
All that remains of that building is an apse with a unique mosaic from the early 7th century depicting the Virgin Mary holding little Jesus in her arms. To their left stands the archangel Michael and to their right Gabriel, each holding an orb and a rod. Unfortunately, the figure of Michael is seriously damaged - only his head, part of his robe and his hand remain. The images are executed in the traditional manner of icon painting of the early Byzantine period. In addition, this mosaic gave the name of the whole church - Panagia Angeloktistos, which means "All-Good Lady of Angels".
Later on the site of the destroyed building in the 11th century was built Byzantine church. And in the XII century a small chapel in honour of Saints Cosmas and Damian was erected nearby. In the XIV century another chapel appeared - Roman Catholic. To date, she is the entrance to the Angeloktistos. They have some more interesting mosaics.
The church is still active, although mostly locals come there to pray. Despite its world fame, it is not very popular among tourists, so it is not crowded, and no one will disturb the beauty of the place.
