One of the most famous mosques in Larnaca, located almost in the heart of the city, has several names: Jami Kebir, Kami Kebir, also called Buyuk Kami Mosque. It is located directly opposite the Larnaca Fortress, built during the Middle Ages, and not far from St Lazarus Church. It is its location and proximity to famous landmarks that has made this mosque so popular with foreign tourists.
Remarkably, built in the 16th century, Jami Kebir was originally a Catholic cathedral, which was converted into a mosque when the Ottomans took over the island. In general, during the 300 years of Turkish rule in Cyprus, many other Christian churches built by the Byzantines and Venetians were converted into Muslim religious buildings.
The building of Kami Kebir, made of light-coloured stone, is relatively small in size. It is decorated with arches and columns on the outside, and its graceful minaret rises several dozen metres above the ground. This beautiful tower is a kind of landmark for those who go to this mosque, as it can be seen practically from anywhere in the city. But inside the building looks much simpler and more modest than outside.
Jami Kebir is a functioning mosque, which is constantly visited by both local and visiting Muslims. However, entry for tourists is also allowed there. Everyone is welcome to visit this beautiful structure, but shoes must be removed and women are required to cover their heads.
The mosque was extensively renovated in 2010.
The mosque is located in the centre of the city.
