The history of Cyprus dates back many centuries. During this time, its territory has been visited by many peoples. But whichever of them seized power on the island, its life was inextricably linked to the sea. The sea has always played a significant role in the history of the development of the Cypriot states.
In 2005, in the centre of the resort of Ayia Napa, a museum was opened which illustrates this close relationship between man and the sea. The museum is a large three-storey building made of steel, wood and marble. Exhibits in it are located in seemingly unexpected places - they hang from the ceiling and even lie in special showcases in the floor so that you can "walk" on them and admire them from above.
The exposition of the Museum of the Sea itself includes unique finds - objects that were discovered on the coast of the island, as well as on the seabed near the coast of Cyprus, covering a period of history of more than 7 thousand years, from the Neolithic era to the present day. For example, there are replicas of ships created on the basis of found wrecks, which clearly show the "evolution" of shipbuilding and the history of seafaring in Cyprus since the 10th century BC. In addition, the museum's collection includes many art objects - paintings, statuettes, engravings, united by the maritime theme.
A visit to this museum will be especially interesting for all those who are seriously interested in the sea. The museum regularly hosts a variety of scientific seminars, lectures, meetings and symposia, where scientists gather to discuss the results of their latest research.
