Radnická Street is home to one of the most interesting historical buildings in Brno - the Old Town Hall. It was built in the 13th century on the site of an older Romanesque building. It was destroyed and the foundations were used for subsequent buildings. In the XVI century the town hall was expanded and a tower was added to it. Anton Pilgram, an architect who eventually became famous far beyond the borders of his native Bohemia, worked on the decoration of its facade. It was he who decided to make a joke by creating the illusion of a tower falling on the heads of the townspeople. This architectural joke can be appreciated if you look at the town hall not from afar, but up close.

The town hall was the seat of the city fathers. It was the most recognisable building in Brno, so it's not surprising that there are many legends associated with it. For example, any boy will tell you about the Brno Dragon. Only when you are in the small archway in front of the entrance to the Town Hall, you will realise what it is all about. A stuffed crocodile appeared in Brno in the 19th century, it was a gift from a foreign nobleman. The town governor ordered the stuffed crocodile to be placed in the town hall for everyone's amazement (it is still there, suspended on chains from the ceiling). The townspeople were amazed at the sight of the unfamiliar beast and discussed it at every corner. This is how the legend of the dragon appeared, which did not let the locals pass, lived on the river and was not going to leave the place. So the townspeople gave him a bag of lime. The dragon ate the treat and then drank it with water. The extinguished lime soon simply tore up the monster, and the townspeople stuffed its skin with straw and brought the effigy to the town hall, where it hangs.

There is a viewing platform on the tower of the town hall.
