The Museum of Fine Arts houses an interesting collection of paintings, regularly hosts exhibitions of Egyptian and international artists and the Alexandria Biennale, an exhibition of works by artists from Mediterranean countries. The museum is housed in a beautiful mansion, which was donated to the city in 1954 by the wealthy Menaske family. In the museum's garden is a statue by Mahmoud Mukhtar, the most famous contemporary Egyptian sculptor.
