Egypt (Arabic مصر Misr/Miṣr [misˤɾ], Masri مصر Masr/Maṣr [ˈmɑsˤɾ], Coptic. Ⲭⲏⲙⲓ [kʰēmi]), the official name is the Arab Republic of Egypt (Arabic. جمهورية مصر العربية Jumhuriyyat Misr al-Arabiyya, masri جمهورية مصر العربية Gumhuriyya Masr il-Arabiyya), is a transcontinental state located in North Africa and the Middle East (Sinai Peninsula).

It borders Israel and the partially recognized state of Palestine in the northeast, Sudan in the south, and Libya in the west. The country is washed by the Mediterranean Sea in the north and the Red Sea in the east, both seas being connected by the artificially constructed Suez Canal.
