The city of Harer is located in the eastern part of the country, on a plateau cut by deep gorges, surrounded by deserts and savannahs. Its fortified historical part, surrounded by walls built between the 13th and 16th centuries, the Jugol, is sacred to Muslims. Harar Jugol, said to be the fourth most religiously important city in Islam, has 82 mosques, three of which date back to the 10th century, and 102 places of worship.
