Aksum is the capital of the ancient kingdom of Aksum (1st millennium BC), ruled by the Solomonid dynasty, who considered themselves descendants of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. The city literally radiates an aura of antiquity. It is said that King Menelik of Ethiopia took the Ark of the Covenant from Jerusalem and it has been secretly kept in the Church of the Virgin Mary in Axum ever since.
