The Handicraft Museum of Finland is a state specialised folk art museum located in the city of Jyväskylä. It is a great place for leisure activities for the whole family.
In a special workshop, you can make your own folk art objects with all the necessary tools and materials and following clear illustrated instructions.
The museum's collection includes examples of folk carving, painting, embroidery, weaving, and ceramics. The collection, assembled between 1906 and 1945, comprises 2,910 items, plus exhibits brought from Sweden, Norway, France and Russia (1,200 pieces). Wooden works are represented by cups, caskets and household utensils. There are also a lot of wicker items, such as baskets and birch bark boxes. An integral part of the Crafts Museum is the Finnish National Costume Centre. The centre's exhibits convey the abundance of colours and the originality of the materials - lace, linen, cloth, pewter brooches.
The museum's permanent exhibitions feature highly artistic examples of modern and ancient folk art. The handmade works show the professionalism and self-expression of the Finnish people.
The museum has an art salon where everyone can buy handmade items as well as handicraft magazines, postcards and jewellery.
