A real paradise for sailing enthusiasts is the southern island of the Aland archipelago, Kökar. It is located 28 kilometres from Mariehamn and 74 kilometres from Turku. Kökar is popularly known as "the island of pirates and romantics". A small ferry takes those wishing to visit this "land of adventure" for 2.5 hours. On the island you can see a Bronze Age human settlement,the ruins of a Franciscan monastery and a majestic medieval grey granitechurch made of grey granite. There is also a museum on the island,which contains household items, boats and photographs.
