The Mannerheim Headquarters Museum is one of the main attractions in Mikkeli. The museum opened its doors to to visitors in 2001 with the support of the EU Regional Development Fund and the Finnish Ministry of Education.

The permanent exhibition tells not only about the activities of the main headquarters from 1939 to 1944, but also about the main military events of those years, as well as civilian life.

Marshal Mannerheim, being an experienced military commander, located his operational headquarters in the building of the central folk school, which was at a convenient distance from the Soviet front. Not far away, about 100 metres from the headquarters, was the Communications Centre. Because of the centre's location in a granite rock, it also served as a shelter from air attacks.
