The town of Sondakylä has been a centre for the study of the extraordinary and mysterious natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights since the 19th century.

A modern geophysical observatory located near the town, as well as the "Northern Lights House" present visitors with magnificent photographs and videos, as well as ancient myths and scientific achievements about this unique natural phenomenon.

These neighbourhoods have been nicknamed "the place of stars", where you can admire the unparalleled shimmering Northern Lights. Since ancient times there have been many legends about its nature. It was believed that the shimmering Northern Lights are flashes of anger of invisible gods and sparks from the tail of a fabulous fox. Hence the Finnish name of this phenomenon - "Fox Fire". The exhibition also tells about the origin of the Northern Lights from a scientific point of view.
