Art Museum of South Karelia, located in the former artillery barracks built in 1798, was opened after restoration in autumn 1965.

The neoclassical building with its round vaults harmonises perfectly with the famous works of famous Finnish artists and other art figures from the mid-19th century to the present. Special attention is paid to the exhibition devoted to contemporary art from south-eastern Finland, which developed rapidly in the 1960s. Every year, every season, the museum exhibitions are renewed. The museum also exhibits paintings and graphic works by young Finnish artists.

In addition, the South Karelia Art Museum has a large collection of folk art from the 18th century onwards. Occasionally the museum even holds travelling exhibitions, which are interesting not only for tourists, but also for locals, who want to get better acquainted with the traditional culture of their country.
