The construction of the Cathedral in Mainz began in 975 on the initiative of the Archbishop Willigis, and was largely completed in 1239. The construction works were delayed for more than two and a half centuries due to several major fires. The Holy Roman Emperors Henry II, Conrad II and Frederick II.

The impressive central tower of the cathedral and both of its side towers were decorated in the Baroque style between 1767 and 1773 was decorated in the Baroque style by Ignaz Michael Neumann. The massive bronze sashes doors on the north side of the cathedral date from around the year 1000.

The interior of the cathedral is striking: two choirs of enormous size - one from the Romanesque period, the other from a later period. Romanesque period, the other of a later period; along the central nave are frescoes, along the central nave are frescoes depicting the life of Jesus Christ; near the columns are tombstones of the tombstones of the archbishops of Mainz, including a late Gothic tombstone by Hans Bakofren on the tomb of Archbishop Jakob von Liebenstein, who died in 1508. To the right is a cloister with a fountain. Magnificent oak armchairs in the Rococo style. Rococo style oak armchairs, designed by Franz Anton Hermann in 1767, surround the altar.
