While still crown prince Ludwig I, fascinated by antiquity, ordered agents to to acquire Greek and Roman works of art. Having built the Glyptothek in 1816-30, Leo von Klenze thereby created a dignified frame for the artworks. for the exhibits. The building of the Glyptothek with its four wings, whose courtyard gives light to the halls, lies behind an arcade with Ionic columns. The outer walls without windows are enlivened by sculptures set in niches.

The Propylaea building was designed by Leo von Klenze in the Neoclassical style, modelled on the Propylaea of Athens. modeled on the Propylaea of the Acropolis in Athens. The Propylaea was built with money from the private foundation of Ludwig I. Ludwig I foundation after his abdication.
