The city gates of Holstentor are located on the island. They were built Hinrik Helmstede between 1466 and 1478 to a Flemish design. It is a structure with two massive round towers is a symbol of the city of Lübeck. In the gate towers gate towers house a museum of the city's history.
At the other end of the Old Town stands another gate, the Burgtor. They were built a little earlier, in 1444. The final baroque part of the gate was built much later, in 1685. The five storeys of the tower are decorated with the same rows of windows but different numbers of windows. This gate was the only land entrance the only land entrance to Lübeck.
