The Marienberg fortress, overlooking the town on the other side of the river Main, was a bishop's residence until the beginning of the 18th century, so it was repeatedly rebuilt over the centuries. The Marienkirche church has been preserved, numerous fortress buildings and a system of bastions. From the walls of the fortress, from the Marienberg mountain, there is a beautiful view of the baroque Old Town of Würzburg.
The Franconian Museum is now housed within the walls of the fortress. Here a rich collection of Tilman Riemenschneider's sculptures, as well as various exhibits telling the turbulent history of Würzburg, its rulers and its inhabitants.
