The Sprengel Museum is one of the best contemporary art museums in Europe. The building was constructed on the shores of the artificial lake Masch in the very centre of the city centre in 1979 with a donation from chocolate magnate Bernhard Sprengel, whose name the museum still bears today.
The museum's collection includes works by Munch, Chagall, Picasso, Klee, Malevich, Christo, Kurt Schwitters and many other artists. Widely represented are Surrealists, Dadaists and Expressionists. In front of the museum there is an abstract figure by W. Calder.
