The Church of St Lawrence was built in 1260 on the remains of an ancient Romanesque basilica. Between the two early towers can be seen a superb stained glass window, the "rose", which has a diameter of 9 metres. Many of the interior riches were lost, some were sold to reduce the city's debts. During the Second World War, the church treasures were saved by placing them in the city cellars. The building, however, was completely destroyed. It was restored to its original form in 1952.
In the choir of the church there are three masterpieces: a monstrance, a gilded candelabrum and the sculpture "Greeting of the Angel" by Feit Stoss. Above the choir are magnificent stained glass windows: an imperial stained glass window from 1477 and the Folklamer stained glass window.
