The round in plan building of St Paul's Church with its tall square tower is a symbol of German democracy and the unity of the nation. The Paulskirche was built in 1789 and witnessed the sessions of the first German parliament from 1848-1849. It now hosts meetings and receptions, and the Goethe Prize is awarded.
