The picturesque island of Zakynthos is rightly considered one of the most beautiful islands in Greece. Every year thousands of tourists from all over the world come to this fabulous island to enjoy its magnificent natural landscapes, fantastic scenery and the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea.

On the northern coast of Zakynthos, in the area of Cape Skinari, about 35 kilometres from the capital of the island, are the famous Blue Caves, one of the most famous and impressive natural attractions of Greece. The caves are partially submerged in water and are accessible only by sea.

The Blue Caves were discovered in 1897 and got their name because of the stunning azure colour of the water. Through the arches of bizarre shapes, carved in the snow-white rocks by nature itself, you will get into the incredible beauty of the caves. The sun's rays penetrating here are refracted by the calcium and mineral-rich water and, combined with the white rocks, create a stunning effect. The depth here averages about 4 metres and the water is so clear that you can see every pebble at the bottom. The Blue Caves are particularly popular with scuba divers.

The nearest port from which you can go on an excursion to this amazing place is Agios Nikolas, located on the north-west coast of the island. But, of course, you can organise an excursion to the Blue Caves from virtually any port in Zakynthos. You can also rent a boat and go to the caves on your own. However, in this case it is worth considering that visiting the Blue Caves (and even more so swimming) in bad weather conditions is strongly discouraged.

If you want to fully enjoy the beauty of this man-made wonder, you should visit the Blue Caves at sunrise or sunset.
