On the northern coast of Crete about 70 km from Chania and 80 km from Heraklion lies the picturesque port town of Rethymnon, a popular tourist centre with a well-developed infrastructure and one of the most beautiful and interesting towns in Crete.
Rethymnon was founded in the 13th century during the Venetian domination of the island and harmoniously combines in its architecture the styles of different eras and cultures. The highlight of Rethymno is undoubtedly the well-preserved historical centre of the city, or the so-called "Old Town", with its unique flavour and abundance of various sights.
Getting to know the Old Town should probably start with its "heart" - the Venetian fortress Fortezza, built in the second half of the 16th century on the Paleokastro hill. It once housed a military garrison and administration and only partly residential houses (mostly Venetian), but also served as a temporary shelter for the inhabitants of Rethymnon (in case of an attack on the city), whose houses were located outside the fortress. During the Turkish period the fortress underwent some changes and additions, but with time almost all of them were removed and today Fortezza is a fine example of Venetian fortification architecture. However, it is worth climbing Paeocastro Hill not only for the old fortress, but also for the stunning panoramic views from the top. Opposite the main entrance to the Fortress, in the building that once housed the barracks, today houses the fascinating Archaeological Museum, which is considered one of the best museums in Crete.
In the centre of the old town is also the Venetian Loggia, built in the middle of the 16th century by the famous architect Michele Sanmichele. This elegant structure was once the venue for various entertainment events for local nobles, as well as meetings of statesmen to discuss important economic and political issues. In Platano Square you will find the famous Rimondi Fountain, built in 1626 by order of the Governor of Rethymno, A. Rimondi, after whom it was named. Not far from the square in a beautiful 17th century mansion is the Museum of History and Folk Art, whose exposition will introduce you in detail to the cultural history, traditions and peculiarities of the islanders' life. The Guora Gate, Our Lady of Angels Church, Kara Musa Pasha Mosque and Nerantze Mosque also deserve special attention.
And after walking the streets of the Old Town and seeing its main sights, you should definitely go to the picturesque seafront, and then stop by one of the cosy restaurants or cafes where you can relax and enjoy the traditional local cuisine.
