The Central Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world, after the Emmanuel Synagogue in New York. It was built in 1859 in the Moorish-Byzantine style by Austrian architect Ludwig Ferster. The building was partially destroyed during World War II, but has since been restored to its original splendour.
