The construction of the Church of the Virgin Mary in the early Gothic style was started under the reign of King Béla IV Béla IV (1255-1269). Its northern bell tower belongs to this period. Under Lajos I the Great the southern gate, the so-called Mary's Gate, was built later, under Sigismund and Matyasz, who was twice married in this church (that is why the church is most often called Matyasz's church), a southern bell tower was added with a a coat of arms depicting a raven. The frescoes in the Matyasha Church are by Bertalan Sekei and Karay Lotz. In the chapel of Loreto stands the legendary 16th century marble sculpture of a Madonna.
