The rich collection of the Museum of Fine Arts is based on the extensive collection of paintings by the Esterházy family. The Museum presents artworks from ancient times to the present day.
The museum is divided into eight departments: Egyptian Art, Antiquity, Baroque Sculpture, Old Masters, Drawings and Prints, 19th century Masters, 20th century Masters and Modern Sculpture. The greatest names associated with the Old Masters are Tiepolo, Tintoretto, Veronese, Titian, Raphael, Van Dyck, Bruegel, Rembrandt, Rubens, Hals, Hogarth, Dürer, Cranach, Holbein, Goya, Velázquez, El Greco and other painters whose works are housed in the museum. Among the French artists of the 19th century, Delacroix, Corot and Manet are best represented. The museum often organises temporary exhibitions.
