India's largest museum is located in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Its establishment triggered an intensive study of the country's history and culture and the opening of 40 other multi-purpose museums across India. The Museum of India was founded in 1814 on the initiative of the Asiatic Association of Bengal founded in 1784 by Sir William Jones. The idea for the establishment belonged to Dr Nathaniel Wallich, as did the museum's first exhibits. It was originally intended to have only two sections: the first was ethnological, archaeological and technical, and the second geological and zoological. The trustees of the museum, who provided exhibits for its collection, in addition to Wallich himself, were many rich men and women.
