A mountain rising 125 metres above the south-western shore of the Sea of Galilee. This is where Jesus delivered the famous Sermon on the Mount. Each part of the sermon begins with the words "Blessed..." - hence the name of the mountain, "The Mount of Beatitudes." This is also the place where Jesus chose the 12 apostles. The place has been honoured by Christians since the Byzantine times. Byzantine times and there was a church on the side of the mountain.
The Catholic church dedicated to the Commandments of the Beatitudes was built in 1937, designed by architect Antonio Barluzzi. The temple belongs to the Franciscans and has an octagonal shape symbolising the eight beatitudes. Inside the temple, the eight Commandments of the Beatitudes are inscribed in alabaster windows. The open gallery of the temple offers a beautiful view of the Sea of Galilee.
