The creation of this monument was entrusted to Giuseppe Sacconi and started in 1885, but it was not inaugurated until 1911. This grandiose monument was to serve to glorify Italy after its reunification. It is in monumental classical forms, dictated by the patriotic sentiments of the time. The heart of the monument is the Altar of the Motherland with a majestic statue of Rome, the silent guardian of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Nearby is an equestrian statue of Victor-Emmanuel II and a plaque engraved with the text of the news of the 1918 victory.
