One of the most picturesque squares in Rome is Piazza España. The square got its name from the Spanish embassy building located on it. In the centre of the square is the famous Boat Fountain by Pietro Bernini (1627-1629). It is a truly vivid and figurative embodiment of a sinking boat, with jets of water flowing from its stern and bow.

Piazza España is famous for its Staircase, whose steps, made entirely of travertine by the architect Francesco de Sanctis (1723-1726), rise up to Piazza Trinito dei Monti. Its twelve spans, narrower and wider, lead up to the majestic building of the Church of Trinito dei Monti. It is one of the grandest Franciscan churches in the city. Its construction began in 1503, and it has undergone alterations and renovations at various times. The austere façade, designed by the architect Carlo Moderna, with a single order of pilasters and a wide portal framed by columns, is crowned by an attic with a balustrade. The interior, with a large nave, houses beautiful works of art: frescoes by Naldini, Daniele de Volterra, Federico and Taddeo Zuccari, etc.
