The ancient Roman five-arched bridge of Tiberius, spanning the Marecchia River, was built in 14-21 AD, i.e. construction began under Emperor Augustus and was completed under Emperor Tiberius. The bridge stood for more than half a millennium and in 580 it was badly damaged by the Goths. It wasn't until 1680, under Pope Innocent XI the bridge was restored to its present form.
